In partnership with the local homeless shelter in Keene, New Hampshire, a group of us students decided to create a privacy and storage solution for the new shelter space. We collaborated with shelter director Mindy Cambiar and surveyed shelter users to develop a functional unit that would provide a partition between beds and some storage space in the living area. This capstone project was completed within our Manufacturing Enterprise course and given our funding, we were able to manufacture and donate 5 units, with the opportunity to continue the project between the college and the shelter in years to come. Each member of the group was assigned a working role. As the design engineer, I guided the project's functional requirements, aesthetic elements, and execution of CADD drawings. We learned a lot throughout the project and gained a lot of woodworking skills, LEAN manufacturing knowledge, marketing, and financial skills. It was very fulfilling to have a community relationship strengthened through this project and to make an impact with our skills as product designers. We also gained immense communication skills, both internally, within our project group, and externally, with our client (Director of the 100 Nights Shelter). Show less
