In response, ZUMIX was founded with the simple idea that music can change lives. For over 30 years, ZUMIX has provided programs in music, creative technology, and media along with opportunities for employment in a safe, supportive environment. This model is designed for students to grow artistically, personally, civically, and professionally so that they are empowered to successfully transition into adulthood. What began as a summer project with $200 and 20 youth in my loft apartment has grown into a nationally recognized organization serving over 1,000 young people each year. Over the past 30 years, we have adapted to the needs of our constituents, developing programming and an organizational culture with a youth-centered approach. Some of our most notable recognitions and achievements include: - First Lady Michelle Obama presented ZUMIX with the 2011 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award. - ZUMIX was recognized as a Social Innovator by the Social Innovation Forum in 2008. - 94.9FM ZUMIX Radio was awarded a low-power FM license to broadcast by the FCC in 2016 and was a 2018 Localore Live awardee from the Association of Independents in Radio – a national recognition connecting communities across political, geographic, economic, and linguistic divides. - ZUMIX students performed alongside Sting (2017), Roger Waters at the TD Garden (2018), and Will Dailey at 2019’s TEDx Cambridge.
