I gained valuable experience with PCR, gel electrophoresis and using micropipettes. • ‘DNA Codebreakers’ lab, an introduction to DNA and genetics where each student extracted and visualised their own DNA using chemical lysis with protease and ethanol from their cheek cells. Students learnt simple lab techniques (such as correct use of Pasteur pipettes) and safety while they explored some common genetic traits and find out why they are similar to their parents. • Cheltenham Science Festival, worked alongside staff from the Learning Team to help Discover Zone visitors investigate the science behind food. This included practical demonstrations with the visitors, for example with PTC and investigating the relationship between sight and taste. • ‘Forensics’ lab equips students with basic techniques including fingerprinting, casting and DNA profiling. These skills were put to the test as the students worked together to analyse evidence from a crime science within At-Bristol’s exhibitions. • ‘Taste Lab’, supporting the Live Science team doing various live experiments around the theme of food and taste to the general public visiting At-Bristol. • ‘Changing Materials’ for KS2 students, various demonstrations (for example dry ice), and practical activities aimed to teach students about the properties of different materials.
