Head of Sixth Form, Head of Chemistry

Sep 2012 - Aug 2014
I really enjoyed my role as Head of Sixth Form, it was very fulfilling and a wonderful challenge. Looking after the overall welfare of young adults is very satisfying and a role I would like to re-visit in the future. During my tenure, I introduced a whole spectrum of initiatives and development programmes to enhance the learning experiences of the students. These included: more formal progress and tracking systems, increased support on UCAS and other careers, and a broad variety of social and developmental events, including a leadership training weekend and multi-school events. The small class/cohort sizes gave me the time to further develop a highly individualised support programme for each student. My Chemistry (and Physics) teaching, (GCSE & A level), also continued to thrive with consistently excellent results. I also enjoyed a refresher in pedagogical techniques and teacher assessment through my work as a GTP mentor. I introduced the Extended Project Qualification as an option for Year 12 and introduced many helpful Sixth Form, Science and whole school initiatives, such as a sixth form weekly bulletin, on-line calendars and feedback questionnaires, a monthly careers newsletter, whole school room booking systems, etc. I have also played a key role in investigating and implementing a whole school VLE system. I designed, ran and organised the Sixth Form Enlightenment Lecture programme and the co-curricula enrichment activities, as well as the school archery club. Show less

Head of Science
-
Aug 2010 - Jul 2012
As Head of the Science Department, which consisted of 10 science teachers and 3 technicians, my roles and responsibilities covered all aspects of leading a team of highly qualified teachers in a growing school (current role 700) of mixed Asian and Eurasian students. With the support of the team, I was able to update and streamline many aspects of the day to day running of the department and also introduce more up-to-date teaching practices based on current research in pedagogy. Development and planning tasks were run concurrently with team meetings, new laboratory construction, equipment procurement, budgeting, in-house CPD, progress reporting on staff and students, statistical analysis to assist tracking the learning of individual students, consulting with the technicians team to ensure smooth apparatus requisitions, updating health and safety procedures and ensuring the well being of all staff and students within the department. It was a thoroughly enjoyable post which enabled me to continue to develop my teaching of Science and Chemistry. Show less

Trips & Activities Manager & Teacher of Chemistry
-
Aug 2005 - Aug 2010
Here my main teaching role was in Chemistry, teaching up to A level. (The school follows the British National Curriculum). The examination results that my teaching groups achieved were consistently at the highest levels, with the A level Chemistry students gaining the most value added across the whole school for 3 years running; all achieving Grades A or B. In addition the number of students taking up Chemistry at Key Stage 5 rose from 3 in my first year to 32 this coming year, out of a cohort of 90. The school as a whole performed exceptionally well, considering its mixed ability intake, with 95% A-C at GCSE. I thrived on this climate of learning and enjoyed the challenge of teaching such a broad ability of students. I was also fully involved in the development of schemes of work and assessment analysis across all age ranges. In addition I took on the position of responsibility of Trips and Activities Manager for the whole school (a post I initiated). This involved leading, planning and managing all aspects of off-site trips and activities (as diverse locations as Ladakh, New Zealand and back to the UK), liaison between all stake holders, organising logistics and administration staff, ensuring participant safety and managing a budget of more than $2.5 million. I also coached the U16 and U18 Rugby Squads, ran adult and student circuit training sessions and assisted with the climbing club. Show less

Chemistry Lead Teacher, Head of Outdoor Learning
-
Sep 2002 - Aug 2005
During my very enjoyable time at The Hermitage I was responsible for the Chemistry Section of the Science Department, teaching to A Level. During these 3 years the exam results for the department improved substantially in both GCSE and A levels; the results of the classes that I taught consistently outperformed other classes and the OFSTED inspection graded my teaching as outstanding. The numbers of 6th Form students taking up Chemistry more than doubled during this period. I also held the management position of Coordinator of Outdoor Learning Opportunities for the whole school. This position involved organising and running numerous adventurous trips covering a vast array of activities and focused on different cohorts of the school population. I also ran extra-curricula activities including the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, coaching rugby and football teams, running a Chess Club and organising National Science Week events within the Community.
