Post-Graduate Researcher, Department of Diabetes

Jun 2021 - Jul 2021
- The research studentship was awarded a competitive bursary by King's Undergraduate Research Fellowship (KURF), whereby a 2-month project was conducted investigating the role of murine depression on pancreatic beta cell function and the effects of serotonin expression as a paracrine regulator of beta cells mass during pregnancy. - The findings of this research suggested that reduced islet serotonin signalling during gestation leads to impaired glucose tolerance and gestational diabetes. Though the results were only preliminary, the data generated contributed to a larger data-set, which has been incorporated into an abstract for submission to the Diabetes UK annual professional conference 2022, on which I am named as an author. - The research experience enabled me to develop many transferable skills, such as the formulation and use of databases, analysis and interpretation of complex data sets with different software packages (eg: ImageJ, CellProfiler, GraphPad Prism, SigmaPlot and MS Excel), plus understand the importance of optimising and troubleshooting issues with alternative methods. - Ability to time manage, liaise with more senior colleagues and confidently work independently were equally improved.
