Industry Talk
-
Apr 2022 - Apr 2022
I was invited to do an industry talk at the college. I spent the day with the first and second year students who were working hard. I spoke to them about breaking into the industry, what kinds of things to expect once working and overall tips that helped me and other industry people to get where we are today. At Waitrose, we place the highest value on animal welfare, environmental responsibility and food quality. That’s why you’ll see the Red Tractor logo on so much of our packaging – but that’s only the minimum standard we set. While I was finishing university, I applied and gained employment at Select Equipment. During my time here, I was acting in roles such as a print assistant, getting emails from clients, formatting, printing, organizing and packaging them off to be sent. Operating from Kent, we aim to provide a service that feels like you have an internal print and design team. We provide a national all-in-one design, print and delivery service throughout the UK. I stood on my university's career stall at EGX and gave people advice and helped get sign ups for my university course. I spoke to people about what the university offered, singing people up to open days and general networking for the university. My first year game was also chosen to be displayed at the stall. I had some industry legends come and play it, even Doug Cockle, who was charming. I did a lot of networking and my game managed to get quite a lot of buzz. This helped me grow my passion for game designer, even more, and keep working at my studies.

I worked as a secretary and an assistant to the CEO of this company, on and off for 3 years. I would fill in for often one to two weeks at a time, covering illnesses and maternity leaves. I was in charge of manning the front desk, booking meetings, setting them up and organizing clients. I worked as a secretary and an assistant to the CEO of this company, on and off for 3 years. I called up, was offered an interview and then, subsequently, a job with Goodboy Digital. At the time, I had not been to university and I learnt a lot of what game design is, and how a small indie company runs. I was in charge of a little bit of everything, their social media, constructing promotional videos, organizing their office move, helping with game design, QA and just a little bit of everything! I ended up leaving this company to go to University to continue my education into game design. Content that surprises and delights no matter where the audience is or how we reach them. It is the essence of our company, an egalitarian approach to creation where your brand is king and the experience must support it whether on a diminutive mobile device or as an all encompassing virtual world.
