Investigating the genetic basis of spider eye development to better understand variation in animal eye morphology. Sequencing and de novo assembly of embryonic transcriptomes from 5 different spider species – Marpissa muscosa, Pardosa amentata, Segestria senoculata, Zygiella x-notata and Drassodes sp. Identification and expression pattern analysis of retinal determination genes in the spiders Acanthoscurria geniculata, Pholcus phalangioides, M. muscosa, P. amentata, S. senoculata and Z. x-notata. Identification and expression analysis of cis-regulatory elements responsible for the divergent embryonic expression patterns of two recently duplicated genes in the Drosophila lineage. I established several Drosophila melanogaster reporter lines with sequences from D. ananassae, D. pseudoobscura and D. virilis, to study the divergence of cis-regulatory elements regulating the embryonic expression patterns of two recently duplicated genes. I also further dissected the regulatory regions previously identified in D. melanogaster to identify the minimal sequence size driving the divergent embryonic expression patterns between paralogous and orthologous duplicates. Identification and expression analysis of cis-regulatory elements responsible for the divergent embryonic expression patterns of two recently duplicated genes in Drosophila melanogaster. I established several Drosophila reporter lines that allowed me to identify the genomic regions responsible for regulating each individual embryonic expression domain of a pair of tandemly duplicated genes.

Phylogenetic analysis of the genetic diversity of Hemileia vastatrix (coffee rust) using molecular markers (RAPD and RFLP) and sequencing of the 16S rRNA coding region. This analysis showed the correct grouping of previously known coffee rust strains from different regions of the world, showing that molecular characterisation can be used to properly categorise unknown strains.
