Head of Retail

Oct 2019 - Present
Terry Howell is one of the largest independent builders' merchants in South Wales, with over 60 years of experience in the industry. As Head of Retail, my role is primarily focused on managing our Retail division. This includes the sales growth and development of our Retail Stores and E-Commerce platform. As part of this development, I successfully led the implementation of a new ERP system in collaboration with Kerridge Commerical Systems in October 2021. Historically, our business had been working on hand written orders and inventory management. While challenging, this digital step has proved to be a huge transformation for our business, giving us greater control on stock and pricing. As a follow-on to this success, we're currently in the process of redeveloping our e-commerce platform to capitalise on the huge growth we've seen in this area of our business. We hope that this development gives our customers better flexibility and control to manage their accounts online. As the scale of our business continues to grow, my role also incorporates the operational strategy of the business, as part of our Senior Management Team. As an independent merchant, we've made huge strides in recent years and we are continually looking to build on this success.

This included working with a number of rewards partners, who I built a firm working relationship with throughout my time as a consultant. In 2018, I was awarded 'Best Newcomer' following high performance during my first 6 months in the business. I left this position in 2019, after being head hunted for my current role within T G Howell & Sons. Awards: Best Newcomer 2018

Supervisor & Duty Manager
-
Jul 2009 - Dec 2014
In 2009 I started working as a part time ‘Customer Service Assistant’ for Wilkinson, to help fund my college and university education. After my first year of employment, I was gradually entrusted with various other duties required for the day to day running of a large store. This employment included promotions to ‘Assistant Till Supervisor’, ‘Shopfloor Supervisor and Duty Manager’; managing a 42,000sqft store on weekends. While challenging, this work provided me with a high level of commercial awareness, a firm understanding of leadership and a sharp eye for detail.

In July 2014 I successfully completed a three year degree in ‘Industrial Design’ at Brunel University, London. This multidisciplinary course served to focus on varying aspects of product design and manufacture. It was during this time that I gained valuable experience designing for a range of client companies such as; ‘Philips Lighting’, ‘The James Dyson Foundation’, ‘M&S’ and ‘The Building Trust International’. This experience was further enhanced by my final year project, taken in collaboration with ‘Nacco Material Handling Ltd.’, devising a system for increasing on site awareness of material handling equipment. This process exposed me to a range of new environments, where I had to quickly adapt to make suitable and considered design recommendations to existing industry professionals. While challenging, the experience provided me with a richer understanding of professional communication standards and structures, while enhancing my ability to make informed decisions. Upon completion of this project, the work was selected to be a part of the annual ‘Made in Brunel’ show at Bargehouse, London, and published works ‘Made in Brunel 2015’.

Student Ambassador
-
Nov 2011 - Jun 2012
Over the course of my first year in university I was employed as a ‘Student Ambassador’ to work on UCAS days at the university; talking to prospective students about the degree, the facilities that were available and answering any queries they may have had. My reason for leaving this role during my second year was a decision based around allocating much more time to my course, as the level of intensity increased.

Project Manager - Work Experience

May 2008 - May 2008
For work experience, I spent a week with ‘The Bristol Port Company’, who work within the Port of Bristol to regulate maintenance and design. During my week I moved around various departments; from Project Management to CAD design. Not only did this give me the ability to experience how construction is carried out, but it also gave me the opportunity to study CAD software and other forms of design first hand.
