I am the recipient of the David Norman Bursary Award, offered by Jersey Water. This consists of a temporary work experience placement with the company every summer when I have a break from my studies and a bursary award given to me every semester of my studies to contribute towards my living costs. The nature of the work is varied, this bursary provides me the opportunity to experience all of the different aspects of a large utilities company, from the customer service and financial services departments to the more practical based water treatment and network departments. I am able to tailor my experience with the company to suit my own knowledge and interests, as well as being able to challenge myself to further understand those areas of which I previously had little knowledge. As part of the 4th year of my degree, I did a work-based placement with community group On the Verge, during which I interviewed various local authority and community group members across Central Scotland, as well as a local councillor. The purpose of this project was to investigate the constraints surrounding government engagement with ecological initiatives, with a focus on wildflower planting; the output was a local authority lobbying pack to be distributed by On the Verge to community groups across Scotland.
