For the last 4 years at Tessian I have helped build out a suite of monitoring, reporting and configuration dashboards for out best-in-class email threat prevention products. Working predominantly in React and TypeScript, we have built a new design system and component library (via Storybook), complete with E2E tests (via Cypress) and unit tests in Enzyme.I have personally lead large updates of our UI to bring a more consistent and intuitive experience to our customers and sales team, working with designers, product managers and backend engineers to achieve this. I enjoy coming up with my own ideas autonomously and bringing them to designers and PMs to discuss potential options and improvements. I enjoy code architecture that is intuitive and scales well whenever possible - especially when it can bring meaningful impact to delivering the product now or in the future. For almost a year I have lead an accessibility initiative, which has achieved dozens of accessibility improvements and encouraged other frontend developers to bring accessibility to their own work. The initiative has been recognised company-wide as being aligned with our Human-First value, and it's something I will aim to bring to every mission I'm part of.I also had the amazing opportunity to be a member of our LGTBQIA+ committee, organising social events for members including a halloween games evening and an LGTBQIA+ themed film night attended by employees across the company, not to mention posting about major awareness events in the LGTBQIA+ calendar. We're revamping Tessian's enterprise dashboard for controlling and observing our highly sophisticated data breach prevention systems.Tessian currently provides a dashboard powered by Ruby on Rails. We're taking the great work already achieved and making it more dynamic to provide a more insightful glimpse into Tessian's inner workings.Primarily working in React and implementing the Redux framework, we'll be reimagining the existing Ruby on Rails pages and recreating them in React with new designs and a new server-side architecture.________________________Tessian protects every business’s mission by securing the human layer. Using machine learning technology, Tessian automatically predicts and eliminates advanced threats on email caused by human error - like data exfiltration, accidental data loss, business email compromise and phishing attacks - with minimal disruption to employees' workflow. As a result, employees are empowered to do their best work, without security getting in their way. Founded in 2013, Tessian is backed by renowned investors like Sequoia, Accel and Balderton and has offices in San Francisco and London. Show less

For over a year, I worked on Riot (now Element), the shiniest example of a communication app built on Matrix, an open protocol for decentralised communication. Technologies that I've been using include React (UI for Riot), NodeJS (for our bridges) and Python (for the reference implementation of a Matrix homeserver - Synapse) all of which can be found on GitHub - https://github.com/lukebarnard1. So far, I've had the chance to work on all levels of the stack from server to client with most of my experience in working on the IRC bridge and on Riot. I've also had a glimpse of GoLang through developing the Guggy integration for Riot. I was heavily involved in developing the integrations system for Riot that can be used to bridge many different communication systems, such as Slack, IRC, and Gitter (i.e. send a message from Slack to IRC/Gitter/Riot and every combination thereof). I also worked with a member of the Matrix community on a Twitter bridge. Show less

CERN offers a 1 year, paid technical internship to the very best students currently studying in its member states. I worked with a PhD student, also majoring in the area of Computer Science. Our job was to create a web-based solution for analysing a full 8 years-worth of data that had been taken by testing thousands of magnets in CERN's flagship accelerator - The Large Hadron Collider, or LHC. This challenge required excellent ability and understanding with regard to The Web, HTTP, Python and Apache. We chose a combination of software based on the Django framework, using Bokeh, a relatively unknown library, for interactive, live data visualisation. Bringing Django's excellent ORM together with the team's Oracle database was an exciting journey. Show less

For two months, I had the privilege of working in the Advanced Technologies team at Keytree. The experience was fantastic: not only was the job post in the middle of London, but I was also working on real production software in an excellent team of developers, something that I had never experienced before. For two weeks, I worked at CERN under the leadership of Alick Macpherson, a physicist at CERN with another intern. We worked together on a statistical module for use on data generated by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Data of concern was the position of the beam at different points of the LHC. The end product was software (written in Java) to calculate an estimate of the frequency and decay constant of the oscillations of the position of the beam for a given beam. I quickly learned how to interpret the data going into the program and also being outputted. Working with others, I had to quickly get to know my co-worker and support him when help was needed whilst maximizing my own productivity. It was truly incredible to be given such an opportunity to work at the very forefront of modern physics. Show less
