I supported the Head of the Personal Injury and Medical Negligence department and a Senior Associate with the day to day management of their cases, to ensure everything ran smoothly and they were able to make the most efficient use of their time. I was responsible for liaising with clients, experts, counsel and internal colleagues, managing busy diaries, providing assistance with financial matters and drafting standard documents/e-filing with the Court. I coordinated the workflow by delegating where necessary to our specialist document production and practice admin teams, and worked collaboratively with a Legal Secretarial Assistant to provide effective service delivery to my allocated fee earners and colleagues in the department. I ran a case load of 150+ criminal injuries matters from inception through to settlement, advising clients as to their likely settlement award by reference to the CICA Scheme and tariff. I was responsible for progressing clients' cases with the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority and keeping them updated every step of the way, adding value to their claims using knowledge and expertise gained on the job. Additionally I fielded new enquiries by telephone on a daily basis whilst managing a busy case load. My proudest achievement in this role was challenging a CICA decision for a lady who had experienced a sexual assault and was initially awarded £0. After a successful review of the case, the final award was £11,000. Show less

I was introduced to some of the core principles of employment law through the guidance and mentoring of senior fee earners, then applied this knowledge in my role assisting with a large group holiday pay claim involving complex schedules of loss and hands-on communication with clients. After 12 months I moved into the personal injury department, developing my keen interest in this area of the law and working in the niche area of cycling injury claims. I was responsible for tasks including the review and collation of medical records, taking and drafting witness statements from clients, updating schedules of loss and submitting claims on the RTA EL/PL portal/drafting letters of claim. During my time at Leigh Day I also really enjoyed getting involved with activities outside of work such as fundraising efforts with my colleagues and helping to organise social events/monthly drinks as part of the social committee. I acted as a point of contact for the costs team in the Manchester office, providing administrative support to costs fee earners and the wider team. I sought out the opportunity to progress to junior fee earner level by learning to draft inter-partes bills, schedules, costs statements and undertake negotiations to achieve the maximum costs settlements for insurer clients.
