The Thomas J. Watson Fellowship is a one-year grant for purposeful, independent exploration outside the United States, awarded to graduating seniors nominated by one of 40 partner colleges. The title of my project is "Life on Small Boats: Connections to the Sea" and my project description is "Oceanography expands beyond academia into the lives of those who live beside, depend upon, and engage with the sea. During my Watson year, I will explore how small boats facilitate deep connection to the ocean in island communities, broadening my bond with the sea while informing my journey as a oceanographer."I will be traveling to Greece, New Zealand, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Japan.

Spend the month of June conducting oceanographic research aboard the R/V Neil Armstrong, operated by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The research cruise took place in the subpolar North Atlantic, out of Reykjavik, Iceland. During the months of July and August, I am performing data analysis in MATLAB. I analyze data taken curing the cruise and data that has been collected by autonomous sensors over the past 4 years.
