While I was a dental school student I created an oral consciousness project called the Tooth Brush Project. This project was started in 2001 when I first came in contact with the poor conditions of the favelas. There are sometimes families of 6 people that share 1 toothbrush. Dental floss does not exist at all. I felt profoundly sad. I felt powerless. Imagine the world without children's smiles; it's almost inconceivable to envision a world without this open sign of love and happiness. I remembered going to bed, as a child. How simple, how beautiful, how restful. I remembered my old room, my favorite stuffed animal. I thought this is as life should be: a warm safe home, a warm bed, a stuffed animal to hold on to when the lights get shut off. I experienced this as a child and so did most of the people I know, except my dental patients and many many more poor in Brazil. Caring for teeth is a daily regiment but without a toothbrush, toothpaste or dental floss it is impossible to improve or maintain oral hygiene. Although I am no longer a dentist I keep the project alive by periodically asking for donations. So I turn to the largest community - Us, all of us at large. . . I asked friends, my friends asked their friends, and sure enough, toothbrushes, toothpaste , dental floss and stuffed animals were always sent!!! Time changes all things. But, sadly, I have not seen it change poverty in the favelas. And, sadly, the government hasn’t changed poverty either. Humanity changes these conditions. I know this, because I have seen it. I have seen your humanity and what it has done for a community. So, dear friends and friends of friends and friends of friends of friends, next time you are in a drug store, please take a moment and consider our modest but great needs: Toothbrushes, toothpaste, and dental floss. I am also collecting used stuffed animals to pass out to the children. Show less
