ER Tech As an ER tech, I played a vital support role to my fellow nurses and physicians. I learned how to triage, identify critical patients, and prioritize care. In this role, I cared for a wide variety of patients, from codes and traumas to patients suffering from psychiatric issues or from a disadvantaged socioeconomic status. In 2020, I quickly learned the importance of being flexible and a quick study as I watched coworkers and management adapt to a global pandemic. Patient Transporter

Transport In this role, I was responsible for transporting patients for admission, exams, procedures, and discharge. We also participated in bi-hourly rounds in the ICU to ensure regular turning and bed changes for those patients. We were tasked with assisting in postmortem care. Provided additional help ambulating patients with PT/OT and lifting patients when there was a fall. Provided additional help ambulating patients with PT/OT and lifting patients when there was a fall. I was not seeking this role when I entered healthcare, but in hindsight, it was the best introduction to healthcare I could have asked for. I learned how each department and floor operated and spent invaluable 1-on-1 time with patients connecting with them if only for a 10-minute ride down to X-ray. Lead Transport/Trainer Lead transport tech was an opportunistic role within the transport department where I was acted as a middleman between departments: helping floors, testing areas, and departments solve problems that arose throughout the day. It was also in this role that I assisted the Critical Care Outreach nurse during rapid responses and codes that commonly resulted in the patient being transported to imaging and or the ICU. As a trainer, I help introduce new staff to the role of transport. I was passionate about how as a patient transporter, I could utilize my role to improve upon my patient’s day, if only slightly. This passion fueled me to train new staff to understand the value of this mindset and seize the opportunity in front of them.
