Lucas Myers plays an important role in advancing science education for his own students while also supporting and inspiring other high school and higher education faculty to advance science education in their own classrooms. Through 2015-2017, Mr. Myers and I were part of a team working to advance undergraduate biology education at the community college level. The team focused on supporting upwards of 100 community college faculty to incorporate systems thinking and quantitative reasoning into their classroom through professional development workshops. Mr. Myers exhibited a passion for collaborating with a diverse team including peers, education experts, and practicing scientists. He demonstrated a keen ability to bring the voice and needs of community college students and faculty to the table and inspire his colleagues through the development of meaningful and effective workshop experiences. Through his insight and experience, he brought that voice and educational expertise to the writing of a National Science Foundation proposal that would have extended this work. Mr. Myers quickly builds rapport with educators across the spectrum. Specifically, in 2018 he began work with a group of high school science teachers around developing curriculum adaptations that support students’ deep learning of biology concepts. As the biology and pedagogical content expert in the room, he skillfully provides clear examples and pedagogical approaches as well as the reasoning behind his ideas; his contributions increase the teachers’ knowledge and allow them to advance their teaching practice. Mr. Myers draws on his expertise and these experiences to pioneer pedagogical strategies and contemporary content that prepare and inspire his students to be successful in both academic and career pathways. As Mr. Myers is a practiced and skillful educator and collaborator, I have no doubt that he will be a valuable colleague in a variety of settings.

Started as an adjunct instructor in 2011 and I am now a tenured biology instructor at Lower Columbia College. I am responsible for developing and teaching a wide variety of biology courses, including cell biology, anatomy/physiology, exercise physiology, and science college success. I currently serve our campus on the following committees: assessment committee, executive council, governance council, eLearning taskforce, accessibility taskforce, and others. I take great pride and joy in our campus and the education we provide to our students and our community. As an educator I am always focused on my own learning to enhance my pedagogy in an effort to make my courses as effective as possible and decrease any waste in my courses. Show less
