In early 2014 I took an executive role to help our 3D Printing business get off the ground in Barcelona. I inherited the support of Lourdes Setien and can’t imagine what life in Barcelona would have been like without her. We were a startup and worked around the clock. Whether it was coordinating global travel meeting with C-level execs (planning complex trips in extreme detail so I could focus on the task at hand), arranging for large customer and partner meetings on site, planning and executing team offsites, keeping the entire team coordinated and aware of what was happening (the organization was fast evolving), ensuring important functional activities like HR, new employee onboarding and provisioning happened, monitoring team morale and ensuring I was acting on things in a timely manner… Lourdes did it all and made the whole team stronger as a result. One critical aspect of my role was learning how to be effective in a totally new culture. Lourdes is very savvy and acted as a mentor, helping me internalize the nuances of the work culture in Barcelona. Further, she was able to work very effectively with other cultures as we started to expand geographically. Another area that was vital to my success was being able to mesh the needs of my family with a relentless work calendar. Lourdes bridged, making sure my wife always knew my travel plans long in advance to avoid surprises. She also went the extra mile, checking on the family to make sure they were adjusting to a new life in Spain. While I have since moved back to the US and Lourdes has moved on as well, when I return to work with my team that remains in Barcelona things are great, but it’s different for me… less complete.
