Working with Natasha Latysheva within the laboratory of M. Madan Babu at the MRC-LMB, using tools of computational and systems biology to interrogate emerging datasets in the investigation of structural and regulatory bases of cancer. As well as further reading in cancer biology priming me for final year studies in this area, I have begun data analysis with MySQL, written small programs and tools in R (the biomaRt package amongst others*) and Python (to download and process PDBe PISA's proteome-wide interaction interface data**), as well as furthering an existing interest in network analysis using Cytoscape. Taking notes in scientific lectures (1st year UG Computing and Physics) for students with seen and unseen disabilities/SENs just outside of Manchester, I produced consistent and professionally formatted technical documents to meet the needs of the student, improving upon my own methods of study in the process. This work furthered the interdisciplinary bent of my own degree and bolstered my confidence in mathematical and technical fields. Work experience placement
-
Jun 2010 - Jun 2010
One week work experience placement in Liverpool University's Biosciences building. This included analysis of turtle and python haemoglobin with UV spectrophotometry, proofreading for journal submission, in silico (KEGG) comparison of human vs. Lactobacillus (salivarius) lysine biosynthesis, an introduction to biochemical/biophysical analysis methods and equipment, and consideration of experimental ethics. The privilege of this early glimpse into the professional academic world has been invaluable. Show less
