I wanted to see the refugee response in Sicily up close, and seeing as I speak fluent Italian, I went there to witness, to help and to find allies. In Catania I prepared food for hundreds of people attending the soup kitchen near Catania's central station, while in Siracusa with AccoglieRete, I helped with translation of documents and some support around social media use.

Highlights included 'Offshore' for Newstalk radio in Ireland, about families running businesses on the islands off Ireland, as well as "Invisible People', a series about individuals who choose to live their lives under the radar. In 2011, I was arrested at Schiphol airport, the subsequent radio documentary 'I Can Tell by Looking at You' for Irish radio was awarded first prize by the International Association of Women in Radio and Television. During this time I also worked as a reporter for BBC 5 Live made several radio series for BBC World Service, including a 4 part series marking 1 year since the Asia Tsunami 'Faith and the Waves' about how the tsunami had affected the 4 world faiths in South India and Sri Lanka.
