I have worked with Louise at Saltus Grammar School for four years. I have known her to be a professional, highly capable and hardworking member of staff. Louise is guided by moral purpose that drives the work that she undertakes: teaching, mentoring and guiding pupils through their education. Although I do not work with Louise directly in her English department, I know from my colleagues and my work with her as head of year that she is encouraging, supportive and an excellent practitioner. I would highly recommend Louise to any future employer.

Originally employed for a year’s maternity cover post teaching English Language and English Literature to 11-16 year olds, including the AQA GSCE specifications. This was extended when my overseas travel was postponed. I was also the NQT mentor for the English Department and implemented and developed the Student Learning Platform for the English Department, as well as devising a new SoL (alongside two colleagues) for the incoming Year 7. Key responsibilities included: • assisting with the preparation and conduct of the Standardisation Team Meeting and the training of Examiners as necessary; • completing the standardisation process specified in the relevant CIE documents; • supervising the work, monitor the standards and report on the work of the Assistant Examiners allocated to me, and to take appropriate steps to ensure accuracy and consistency; • acting as a mentor for new Examiners, and to give guidance to the members of my team; • carrying out such administrative tasks and responsibilities as specified in the Instructions to Examiners booklets supplied separately by CIE and in any other document or briefing provided by CIE; • completing the original marking of a specified number of candidates’ responses in accordance with the approved marking instructions by a specified date; • considering all reports submitted by Examiners in my team when reporting to the Principal Examiner; • recommending any adjustments to marks awarded by Examiners in my team; • giving an overall report to the Principal Examiner on the work produced by the candidates. Due to my accurate marking and attention to detail, in June 2016, I was also asked to be part of the Grade Review team (unfortunately I was unable to do this due to other commitments). In addition to this, I was then asked to be part of the team who would assist the Principal Examiner with the Enquiries about Results (schools or students appealing the results they had received). This required meeting incredibly short deadlines and analysing the marking completed by the team of examiners in the summer series. Show less

Using the information and expertise that I gained from this experience, I overhauled the GCSE schemes of work being taught at my school in order to ensure teachers were focusing on the skills which were being specifically assessed on particular sections on one of the examination papers. This led to significant rise in the results achieved by students on this paper across the cohort.
