During my time as an apprentice joiner/carpenter, I learnt a lot more than just the skills required to complete those trade specific tasks. I learnt to push myself to learn more and take on more responsibility with greater confidence. This allowed me to take on tasks and complete jobs on my own. Whilst I was working I was required to carry out risk assessments and hot works permits when we were felt roofing. This got me used to working procedures and active health and safety assessments. Doing those types of assessments has put me in good stride for my career in the future as I have completed safe working practices, so I know what standard to hold not only myself to but also my colleagues. I worked here on a weeks placement out of college, during my time I gained some invaluable experience into working engineering industry. I was shown around the plant and helped carry out multiple maintenance tasks alongside the mechanical engineers. I observed many varied tasks and was part of a team that pumped a large body of water out of a building which housed a large electrical transformer. This enabled the plant to keep running without shutdown. During the week I was there, I also got chance to reposition the tracks that were sinking as they were used by cherry pickers to safely collect the tomatoes from the nursery in the glasshouses. I also learnt great communication skills and improved my teamwork skills as we had to make sure we completed these tasks quickly, safely and efficiently. Show less
