Unpaid Work /Summer Work Experience Project: Assay for sodium channel blockers in breast cancer cells. We focused on the ion channel activity as it is involved in several basic cellular behaviours that are integral to the metastasis i.e proliferation and motility. We investigated voltage-gated ion channel (VGSC) expression and its possible role in breast cancer. This experience gave me the opportunity to gain new skills i.e. the splitting(passage) of cells that i did not have and allowed me to improve on others i.e. pipetting technique. The use of a Carbon dioxide incubator to grow cells and checking for growth and health of the cells through a microscope. Cell count was done using a Haemocytometer and using an Omega plate reader to determine fluorescent intensity readings and UV/Vis absorbance. Writing Scientific Journals Show less
