Jennifer Spence
Lori Arbel came to PS/MS 278 as part of a Studio in a School initiative to work with art teachers to improve practices. We collaborated on 3 classroom residencies, (2) 5th grade classes and one multi-level special education classroom, with the (2) 5th grades doing variations of a theme based on their social studies curriculums, and the special ed class studying works from several artists and doing several projects in varied media. Lori was a pleasure to work with, and the collaboration was completely mutual on all levels, from research, to curriculum creation, to implementation, to exhibition. She was highly organized, taught me several new techniques, easy to coteach with during class periods, and has remained a personal friend since then. I can't speak highly enough of Lori's skills and talents, and guarantee she'd be an asset to any school or company she's chosen to work for.

Lori is a consummate arts educator and curriculum developer. After her work for STUDIO in a School as an arts educator in NYC public schools few years ago, we were lucky enough to have her develop some curriculum units for teens as resources for teachers for a Federal grant. She did a terrific job, on time, thorough, and aligned with arts standards. It was a pleasure to work with her gain and have access to her expertise.

Each year, STUDIO provides services to more than 30,000 children in public schools and a wide range of community settings. Its individually designed art programs fulfill the needs of these communities. STUDIO programs are based on partnerships - with teachers, students, administrators, and caregivers. STUDIO believes that training, supporting, and collaborating with those who help shape young people's lives is a key component of making art an indispensable part of education. Classroom teachers do not simply drop their students off for art instruction with STUDIO. Instead, they too participate in the session - often working with the STUDIO instructor to reinforce academic subjects. Thus, by melding the unique skills of an artist and a classroom teacher, STUDIO is able to create programs that are not only tailored to a specific school, but that are more effective than either STUDIO or the school could create individually. Both STUDIO and its partnering sites make a commitment to provide the funds, facilities, materials, schedules, and training that enable art-making to become a regular part of the day and an ongoing part of the curriculum.
