Themes + Projects began as Modernbook Gallery in November 1999. In the early days, we focused on carrying art books that were not readily available at the big chain books shops. As time passed, we began to show artwork by local artists and our concept shifted into an art gallery/bookstore hybrid. In 2010, Modernbook relocated from Palo Alto to the historic 49 Geary art building in San Francisco. By this time our business model had changed to full time gallery and book publisher. In spring of 2015, Modernbook re-branded to Themes + Projects. We are very excited to announce that Themes + Projects is now located inside San Francisco's newest art center, the Minnesota Street Project in the Dogpatch neighborhood. About our program The artists represented, span the spectrum from emerging to mid-career. Their techniques may fall in the tradition of darkroom practices; venture into the realm of alternative or mixed media; or experiment with digital technology. In addition to the gallery space in San Francisco, Modernbook Editions, our publishing division, has published photographic monographs for artists such as Tom Chambers, Fan Ho, Brigitte Carnochan, Fred Lyon, Geir Jordahl, among others. To connect with art enthusiasts, outside the San Francisco Bay Area, Themes + Projects participates in numerous art fairs throughout the United States and Canada. Show less
