After working as a Legal PA/Secretary in various fields for 12+ years, I took a leap and started at Law School. Within a few months I realised that although I enjoy law, I do not want to be a lawyer. I transferred to a Science Degree and am now further considering my options. I was employed on a temporary contract to work for one of the partners in the Business and Property Team. What I am sure would have become a permanent job for me had to end due to my enrollment in Law School at Victoria University. Cairn Energy is a frontier Oil and Gas Exploration and Production company, with their head office in Edinburgh, Scotland. They have just had two big discoveries offshore Senegal, of which I was a part of the team. I was a PA and Team Secretary to at times 30+ staff working within Asset Management, Exploration (Geoscience), Finance and Information Management. Work included diary management, arranging meetings (including VC's etc) and domestic and international travel as well as dealing with any relevant Visa requirements and inoculations. Requisitions, time recording and leave requests were completed using Oracle. The team member's expense claims were completed and submitted monthly. I was also part of the Emergency Response Group (ERG) and was on call for one week at a time, on average every month or so. The above was undertaken along with general office duties, filing, photocopying, reception cover etc. Show less

Though the work was predominantly contractual disputes, there was also Resource Management, Relationship Property, Trust and Employment work. I managed diaries and phone calls, completed dictaphone and copy typing, researched Case Law, compiled case books and other court documents, distinguished the privilege on discovery documents, undertook file management from start to finish including billing (Infinity Law), liaising with clients, lawyers and Courts, as well as general office duties and providing cover where required. I was one of the secretaries within the Mortgagee Sales team, as well as occasionally assisting the Family Law/Relationship Property and Commercial teams where required. A lot of the mortgagee sales work was with precedents, however due to varied circumstances many of the files took a different direction. Shieff Angland was a great opportunity for me to experience different areas of the law.
