Remote programming and research work for Dr. Brian Lamb at WSU for AIRPACT-Fire, working alongside my past coworker and mentor from the Missoula Fire Lab, Natalie Wagenbrenner. The basic idea is that AIRPACT does constant smoke simulations for the country using satellite smoke data, but might see an improvement in accuracy if the simulations also take into account fire perimeters. So I created and am improving a script/application in C++for automating the simulation of fire perimeters using Farsite by feeding WRF meso-scale weather forecast data into WindNinja into Farsite. Means getting familiar with GIS library gdal, as well as tons of compiler and other fun programming stuff. Show less

Second semester so far teaching labs for ME EN 2450 Numerical Methods for Engineering Systems. Great class, amazing reference, lots of work. Basically I'm kind of a mentor helping these students go from little or no programming experience to being able to program on their own. The final project is an optimization simulation of a racing train and it is amazing to see that the students are able to progress so far in a given semester. We cover C/C++ using arduinos, flow simulations using Solid Works, and mainly Matlab and python for doing the simulations of our different physical models using numerical methods. Show less

I work to add a smoke transport model to WindNinja (https://github.com/firelab/windninja). I've written a number of post-processing scripts for better visualization of the smoke transport and currently work to add an energy equation to the solver. I also occasionally do field work with prescribed fires, frequently analyze the data brought back from field work, and once was asked to create a CO sensor array for sampling smoke out in the field. Seems like every 3 months or sooner I was asked to try another project out, which involved learning new applications and programming languages. I primarily worked in VBA, then R, then C++, but also worked a bit with Python and Ruby to do automation stuff with ParaView's Python API and Sketchup's Ruby API. Also used OpenShot, then ffmpeg to take pictures and turn them into videos. Show less

Calculated and modeled dispersion for a worst case release of a highly toxic chemical in air that reacts violently with air. Used ALOHA, the emergency response dispersion model provided by the EPA, to get dispersion and evacuation distances without reaction, then applied chemical kinetics.

Collected unwanted lab materials from all over BYU campus, driving a non-CDL liscenced truck. Made hazardous waste determinations for all materials at the lab, usually based off of SDS's, flammable tests, ph tests, and oxidizer tests, and properly applying RCRA waste codes.

Tutor
-
Jan 2014 - Apr 2014
Helped students from various calculus based math classes to understand what they were learning and to solve problems for their homework. Often would help up to fifty students or more a day. Sometimes needed to interact with frustrated students using customer service skills when there were too many to help without a thirty minute delay.

Worked with a team of up to ten people to set up and take down events inside the Wilkinson Center. At the same time, we tried to clean up all bathrooms roughly every hour and a half. Also did other miscellaneous cleaning. Worked with a team of up to ten people to set up and take down events inside the Wilkinson Center. Prepared food for customers, washed dishes, handled cash, all with lots of customer interaction. At one point, I was finishing sandwiches in a minute and twenty seconds or less.
