Project: Evaluation of Phase Change Material and Retrofit Installation Design for Residential Use Sponsor: Salt River Project - Kyle Yamamoto Mentor: Steve Larimore Team 17066 will be evaluating the performance of SolarThermiX's Infinite R phase change material for use within preexisting residential homes in the Arizona area. By simulation model of the home and PCM system, we will evaluate the energy load shift from peak energy usage hours of 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. to off-peak hours after 6 p.m. during the weekdays. An installation design shall be proposed and this design will account for individual home designs and should be non-invasive. Currently this PCM is installed in commercial buildings by placing the PCM within the ceiling on top of ceiling tile grids for easy installation and maintaining the look of the office spaces. Considering preexisting residential houses our team needs to account for the preexisting architecture of a home and lack of easy entrance points. Residential homes tend to require a higher concern for aesthetics and typically have permanent residents present during most hours of the day, ergo the need for a non-invasive installation method.
