As the lead coordinator for StartingBloc NY'12 Institute of Social Innovation, Lora was instrumental in making the Fellowship programme one of the strongest boosts to my social entrepreneurial endeavours. Not only did she ensure smooth operation, but also she engaged and empathized with candidates on a personal level. I have full confidence that she will play a lead role in the community of social innovators in New York and beyond (not to mention holding me accountable for my post-Institute commitments!).

Ignite Good teaches change makers and civic justice organizers how to tell their stories in powerful ways to inspire positive action and community organizing while winning like-minded allies. Ignite Good creates effective storytellers in partnership with the Huffington Post by running events in Philadelphia and Los Angeles. I oversaw the event planning and production of 2 events on community organizing and storytelling - Ignition LA '14 and Ignition Philly '14. • Assistant to MD State Senator
      • Sep 2011 - Dec 2011

As the Assistant to a State Senator from the 21st District of Maryland, I managed a senator's heavy daily schedule to ensure smooth meetings, fundraisers and events. The key outcome of working in a high-pressure role like this was to ensure the Senator was always at the right place at the right time with the right resources. This was where organization and systems were key in achieving this goal daily. I scheduled and coordinated hundreds of meetings and phone calls with representatives of the MD State and US Senate, House of Representatives, and the White House. I oversaw domestic and international travel while working with the Chief of Staff on financial and legislative operations. Government entities are not the most efficient but this was an excellent opportunity for me to change that in my specific role supporting a State Senator. While I loved the high-pressure and exciting experiences, I knew I could use these operational skills to benefit the private sector. So I did with my next professional adventure. Show less

ThinkImpact brings students and community members together to innovate in developing countries by working with real enterprises to tackle problems on the ground. This was my first entrepreneurial experience. It helped me tremendously, as I learned a lot about the importance of humility, local culture, context and dynamics in collaborating with people from different countries. I successfully applied these first lessons later on when I started managing remote global teams at StartingBloc and Roam. This was my first experience recruiting entrepreneurial individuals and facilitating teams. I’ve learned very quickly how to identify people with potential. I discovered the risks of misaligned team goals in keeping your team together. This was my crash course in recruiting and facilitating a team on the ground while learning the importance of cultural nuances in a foreign country. Show less

START enhances scientific capacity in developing countries to inspire informed action on global environmental change. This was my first job after university. With my academic background in International Affairs, I wanted my work to make a difference in solving global challenges. As the only non-scientist in the organization, I used my organizational skills to coordinate my first international event - I helped plan an international Conference on Education, Capacity Building, and Climate Change in Tanzania, funded by the Open Society Institute. I oversaw international travel while coordinating logistics with over 120 forum participants from multiple countries in Africa and Europe. While my work contributed to bringing international scientists together to work on global environmental change, I wanted to have a bigger impact and try to solve global challenges in ways different from foreign aid work. This was how I jumped into the world of entrepreneurship. Show less
