Harbour porpoises are the most common cetaceans in Dutch coastal waters and Rugvin foundation studies this cetacean in the North Sea and the Eastern Scheldt (Oosterschelde). During my minor research project I analyzed the distribution pattern and group composition of harbour porpoises within the Eastern Scheldt. Together with the photo-identification team and volunteers boat surveys and the annual count were carried out, which provided the data of my research. During my major research project at the department Ecology & Biodiversity, I worked within the LOGLIFE project. LOGLIFE is a long-term common garden experiment with reciprocal exchange of coarse dead wood of multiple tree species, all incubated in each of two contrasting sites in The Netherland, which started in 2012. My focus within this project was to analyze the chemical changes in decomposing wood using FT-IR spectroscopy. I used both acquisitive and conservative tree species that were decomposing for over 4 years. Show less

During my stay in South-Africa I worked with Sea Search Africa. They were collaborating with shark spotters. I investigated The presence of whales and dolphins in False Bay and Noordhoek with data from Shark Spotters’ whale and dolphin observations. Furthermore I learned to work with photo-identification and we went multiple times out on the sea to shoot the pictures for this photo-identification During my stay in South-Africa I worked with Sea Search Africa. My internship was in the section Animal Ecology. The research that I did focused on whether great tits, Parus Major, with different personalities react differentially to interspecific alarm calls. And whether they differ in their ability to react to different species calls. These calls are not all known by the Dutch birds. My internship was in the section Animal Ecology.
