Under my appointment as an intern at Starke Ayres Seed in the Pathology department, I have been given the opportunity to learn and be exposed to various ways to ensure the quality of the seeds produced and distributed adhered to the standards of food safety. This department is divided into two sub-departments which are Pathology Research and QC Pathology and I am currently based in QC Pathology where we focus mainly on the distribution of seed that is disease-free, this is done by testing the seeds for any pathogens that could be present.As an intern I am responsible for the following:° Sample preparation for bacterial, fungal and viral tests° Media and buffer preparation according to recipes provided under set conditions° Plating of bacterial and fungal samples° Evaluation of bacterial test results ° Sampling of plant material °Planting and transplanting of crop plants for health tests° Bioassay inoculations for pathogenicity tests° Diagnostic isolations on plant material° Operating and maintaining of lab instruments and equipment ° Keeping records of stock and other lab inventory° General housekeeping according to lab hygiene and safetyIn addition, I am equipped with the following practical knowledge and experience:°Molecular microbiology : - DNA & RNA extraction - PCR - Gel electrophoresis° Research - Conducting of research projects for pathogenicity tests - Report writing skills° ELISA Show less
