I remember waking up so early it was black outside - My first day of work was thrilling. I was tired, but the fresh faces on the bus were caffeine. We arrived at the field and were split into groups of 5. 4 people detassling a row, and 1 person checking from behind. Since i was only 12 i was a puller. It hadnt occured to me until i got to the field, and was assigned my row of corn, that i didnt know what a tassle was... All i knew was the tassle was at the top, so with my workman gloves i gripped the top of every stalk no matter how high they got, and i ripped it off. My arms were cut by rough leaves. Hands cramping from the harsh pulling. Finally, i reached the end, and immediately inquired about a tassel, best ways for removal, and what checkers do and how they best manage all 4 rows. Well.. A moment later, Mr. Miller called out "We need one more checker!" My "Checker" called out "I have someone who didnt miss a single tassle. He should be promoted!" I turned to see who she was vouching for, and was suddenly pushed up to Mr. Miller. I didn't miss a single tassle. Mr. Miller looked down at me and said "Do i Recognize you?" "Have you detassled for me before?" I have met Mr. Miller. I surely recognized him. I did just detassle a row of corn with 100% accuracy, and now feel fully comfortable as a puller and checker. So i said yes to both. And on my first run as a checker i followed the advice someone had given me after my first row. They said "watch your team closely on the low corn. If they are already missing some, pull them back with you. As it gets taller, if someone keeps missing them, pull them back. And then, anyone who is great, tell them to do their row as fast as they feel comfortable and then back pick a teammate. In the meantime, cover anything they miss like those rows are yours, and train the people who arent as good" My team was the first row done. With perfect accuracy. Thats how you build a team.
