It is my great pleasure to write this recommendation letter for Lizzie Heintz. She is truly one of the most brilliant students I have ever had the privilege of teaching, and easily consider her to be in the top 1% of applicants you’ll see. I was the journalism adviser at Seven Lakes High School and Lizzie was the Editor in Chief of The Odyssey yearbook staff during her senior year. She was involved in yearbook since seventh grade and did a fantastic job as a leader of our organization. Her efforts and achievements have earned her lifetime membership in the Quill & Scroll Honor Society for High School Journalists. Lizzie is a remarkable young lady and I am confident that her talent will take her far in life. In my classes specifically, she demonstrated outstanding journalism skills in writing, design, and photography. Her leadership in the organization led to several excellence awards for the publication. It was no question who would be named Editor in Chief when the time came. Coupled with her leadership skills and experience, Lizzie was the perfect candidate for such an important role on staff. She was responsible for the overall look and feel of the book, running staff meetings, teaching the new staff members how to create their pages, managing the editor meetings, staff events, and any other miscellaneous tasks fell on her shoulders. It can be overwhelming at times for students to take on this role when considering the busy time that their senior year usually is with college applications, working, and other extracurricular commitments. As excited as I was to see what her future held, I was truly sad to see her move on from staff. However she is not only gifted in journalism. All through high school, Lizzie was an excellent student, maintaining a very high GPA in AP classes, and welcomed the added responsibility of being named a yearbook editor. She worked to find the balance between her involvement in yearbook, theater, and the community. Since high school, she has worked hard to gain learning experiences across the globe. In looking at her portfolio, I am sure you will be able to see her passion through her work. Her ability to tell a story visually through her photography is truly an art form.

As a top editor, I looked for these qualities in hires: intellectual rigor and curiosity, news judgment, initiative, resilience and collaborative spirit. While still in high school, Lizzie Heintz embodied all those characteristics as a freelance photographer, covering Hurricane Harvey in her hometown of suburban Houston and placing her work in several publications. As her professor on Semester at Sea in spring 2020, I saw her consistently achieve top grades on written assignments and contribute the most thoughtful ideas in discussions. She is a natural leader, selected by her classmates to be the successful debater in a class competition. In several group assignments, she worked collaboratively with all kinds of people. When our voyage ended early because of the pandemic, I saw Lizzie as she disembarked the ship in Cape Town. She was alone, heading off into the unknown in a foreign country, thousands of miles from home. While disappointed, she was also undaunted, ready to embrace the next adventure. But the attribute that most impressed me about Lizzie is what a former editor of mine called
