Organized "View Finders: Four Photographic Voices," May 26 - August 26 2018, including work by Catherine Jansen, Brian Peterson, Michael Smith, and Paula Chamlee. "View Finders: Four Photographic Voices" illuminates the work of four contemporary photographers with local roots -- Paula Chamlee, Catherine Jansen, Brian Peterson, and Michael Smith -- who represent four distinct approaches to the medium. The exhibition includes Chamlee’s incisive studies of surface and place; a selection from Jansen’s project 1008, an “experiential journey into sacred storytelling” made in over 25 trips to India; Peterson’s melodic explorations of nature and light; and a range of Smith’s rarely-exhibited urban portraits from across the US. On the occasion of the Michener’s 30th Anniversary, View Finders celebrates the contributions of these artists and recognizes photography as a significant force in the legacy of the Museum. Organized "Discomfort: Experiments in Furniture, Function and Form" January 17 - May 8, 2016. Discomfort: Experiments in Furniture, Function, and Form is comprised of objects that bear a formal resemblance to furniture but do not function as such. Instead, these sculptures occupy a space between utility and uselessness that offers a variety of responses to the questions “How does it work? What is that object? What is it for? What does it do?” When we own objects purely for their utility, there is a tendency to see past them. Conversely, the artists in this exhibition assert the capacity of domestic objects to act metaphorically. Through a sense of discomfort both literal (“I can’t sit on it”) and psychological (“I don’t understand it”), these sculptures prompt us to look anew at the objects around us. Show less
