I lead on engagement for RIW and this includes the recent development of a new diverse and inclusive citizen engagement panel whose members will be actively involved in commenting on new projects and research ideas from the unique perspective of their personal and professional interest in respiratory health. I also have a key role in linking with diverse groups throughout the communities of South Wales in particular areas which experience the highest levels of respiratory ill health. I led the EDI agenda for the health board which primarily involved compliance with the Equality Act 2010 from a patient, staff and community perspective. During that time I developed, engaged, agreed and promoted 3 strategic equality plans and led on the development and approval of supporting equality policies. I established 3 staff networks - our race equality network was a front-runner in Wales and included membership from over a third of all of our Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff who were highly proactive in raising awareness, developing a buddy system and a discrimination reporting system. We were shortlisted for a highly prestigious NHS Wales for our LGBT network and led many initiatives particularly in relation to a staff support system, trans awareness raising and policies and a 'trans toolkit' relating to patient care which was shared throughout Wales. I also developed a network for disabled staff and we were the first health board in Wales to achieved Disability Confident Leader status. I was directly involved in a national gender equality study led by Cardiff University and spoke at many events in relation to gender equality and our work to improve it within my health board. The study led to the publication to one of the most comprehensive reviews of gender equality in Wales. I led on the sensory loss agenda which involved complying with the All Wales Standards for information and Communication for People with Sensory Loss (sight and/or hearing). I led a Welsh Government project to implement on-line interpretation to ensure more equal access to services for Deaf service users. This was adopted in all areas of the health board and led to very positive feedback in relation to a vastly improved experience from the Deaf community. This was subsequently adopted by 3 other health boards during the Covid pandemic. Our system also proved beneficial to Welsh speakers and patients who needed to communicate in languages other than English. Show less
