The use of composite materials in the automotive sector, in particular for lightweight structures, has grown steadily in the past decades. A major barrier to their increased usage is the low production rate due to a long manufacturing time. Indeed, thermoset matrix composites, the most used in structural mechanics, requires several hours for the curing process. Thermoplastic matrix composites, on the other hand, coupled with the manufacturing process Laser Assisted Tape Placement (LATP) can provide high production rates. The locally high temperature involved is one drawback of LATP, which may generate internal stress distributions within the manufactured structure. These residual stresses characterize the initial state of the structure itself. The goal of this PhD subject is to develop and to implement a model able to predict the initial state (residual stress) of the structures (in particular pipes and pressure vessels) manufactured with LATP. Title: Modeling and simulation of the initial state of a thermoplastic matrix composite structure manufactured by laser assisted tape placement. Main contributions: -A user subroutine UMAT was developed to describe the temperature dependent viscoelastic constitutive behavior of the unidirectional fibers reinforced composite material. -A user subroutine UTEMP was developed to describe the temperature history of the structure caused by the manufacturing process laser assisted tape placement. -Thermo-mechanical simulations were performed using ABAQUS on different structures (tubes and plates) with different stacking sequences. -The developed subroutines were transferred to CETIM for industrial use. Title: Numerical and experimental study of the dynamical non linear behavior of multi-stable shells. Main contributions: -A non-linear kinematic model using the Lagrangian formulation was developed. -The bistable shell was obtained by plastically deforming an initially flat copper disc, so as to induce large isotropic and almost uniform inelastic curvatures. -Experimental study was performed through image analysis (ellipse interpolation) of the recorded videos of the structure dynamic motion.
