My PhD work was related to the studies of crude oil toxicity towards early life stages of fish. Throughout the degree, I: - Developed, optimized, validated and implemented several analytical protocols for analyzing trace amounts of petrogenic compounds in biotic samples. - Completed a thorough examination of the bioaccumulation and elimination of PAHs and alkylated PAHs in two species of fish embryos. - Implemented the use of passive samplers as a biomimetic technique for accumulation of contaminants in fish embryos. - Operated, maintaned and trouble-shooted advanced analytical instrumentation (GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, GCxGC-ToFMS, HPLC) on a routine basis. - Spent five weeks at the Petroleum and Environmental Geochemistry Group (PEGG) at the University of Plymouth, UK, performing GCxGC-ToFMS analysis under the supervision of Dr. Steven Rowland. - Spent two weeks at the Northwest Fisheries and Science Center (NOAA) in Seattle, US, performing zebrafish toxicity assays in collaboration with Dr. John Incardona. I worked as a junior researcher in the Department of Applied Environmental Biology and Chemistry, focusing on environmental fate and effect studies of emerging pollutants and fossil fuel derived compounds. My main responsibilities in the first year was planning, conducting and reporting fate studies of compounds related to CO2 capture technology. I took part in several projects, wrote technical reports and presented at four international conferences. I published two papers on this work. The characterization of fresh and weathered crude oils, and the study of their fate and effects was a major part of my job over the two years. I took part in multiple projects, studying the physical behaviour, biodegradation, photodegradation and toxicological effects of crude oil pollution in the marine environment. I was responsible for experimental planning and execution, sample preparation, GC-MS analysis and reporting. I was involved in several projects related to the fate of nanoparticles in the environment, where I had responsibility for developing and implementing methods for dispersion and measurement of different types of nanoparticles in aqueous matrices.
