OK, I know what you're thinking, but no, I didn't get the job at Kiplinger because I happen to be a Kiplinger myself. Actually, it was kismet. When I announced I was leaving USA TODAY after 19 years to take a break, do some hiking and basically be a bum, Kiplinger Senior Associate Editor Sandra Block -- a former co-worker at USA TODAY -- got word. Turns out there was a job opening at Kiplinger perfect for me. So, break over, back to work ... but part-time, which is pretty sweet. A lifetime of fanatic saving and frugal living, combined with obsessive smart shopping, culminated in pretty much the perfect job for me. I loved helping people make great financial decisions and become informed consumers, and I got to do it every day, producing a four-page weekly section devoted to all things money. From planning the sections, assigning (and sometimes writing) stories and working with freelancers, to editing the content, crafting the headlines and developing visual concepts, I did it all. Taking ownership of the entire product gave me great satisfaction. Show less

At USA TODAY, it's digital first. So I edited stories for our website for accuracy, style, grammar, etc., topping them off with SEO-friendly headlines and a summary for Twitter. Then I reworked them for USA TODAY's print editions. It was a privilege to work with so many fine people there.

I edited all the stories for the front page, writing grab-worthy headlines. In addition, handled graphics, photos and pagination. My favorite headline from my time here was about a nude beach closing: All Undressed and No Place to Go. If only I had a photo to share! At a small paper, you do it all. Two years as a feature writer, with more than 300 stories under my belt on restaurants, theater, health, business profiles and more (my favorite: a first-person piece on what it's like to fly in a glider). The rest of the time I was a News copy editor and designer. At a small paper, you do it all.
