As part of my degree in DCU I travelled to America to work as an Athletic Trainer. In the college I worked mainly with the American Football Team in the college. I received fantastic hands on experience assessing injuries, treating injuries, designing and supervising rehab programmes. I travelled to games with the team assisting in pitch side care and acute injury management. I gained experience in taping and strapping on a daily basis. I was also involved in the initial health and fitness screening for the team. I gained first hand experience in the recognition and management of concussion and the importance of strictly following the return to play protocols with such injuries. Once the football season ended I then worked in the Athletic Training Clinic which dealt with athletes from a number of disciplines including track and field, swimming and diving, wrestling, rowing etc. Show less
