Assistant Legal Services Manager (Housing Litigation)
-
Feb 2019 - Dec 2021
Reporting into Legal Counsel I manage and supervise a team of 4 who both handle all pre litigated claims brought against the Group and provide administrative support. In addition I am the primary contact for our operational staff around the country who have tenancy management related queries and I both triage and provide preliminary advice on these matters. Working closely with the Group's panel solicitors the current focus is to identify potential trends across the Group and to consider where efficiencies may be found as well as upskilling the team, supporting Legal Counsel with bedding in a new and growing team as well as developing relationships across interdepartmental teams. Working within a Students' Union the aim was to assist our union members to achieve they best socially as well as academically whilst enrolled on a course at the University. I provide advice to students on a variety of issues ranging from housing problems to academic, finanical or social difficulties. Aside from advising and representing students it was a role which encouraged work on local and national campaigns affecting students, for example the prevalence of unlicensed Houses of Multiple Occupation (HMOs) and poor quality housing. I worked on wider projects within the Union including project managing and leading on "One World Week" a week of activities which sought to improve engagement from the student body whilst raising awareness of difference cultures. Housing Caseworker
-
Aug 2012 - Apr 2014
I advised clients on legal issues relating to security of tenure, homelessness, possession proceedings and matters relating to the provision of housing.Working within the constraints of legal aid funding and with an often vulnerable client base it was essential to assist clients not only with their presenting problem but with any other underlying issues that may not have been identified. By doing this I provided a holistic approach to my clients and sought to both remedy the presenting problem as well as decreasing the likelihood of it recurring. I was responsible for managing my caseload and would manage the case from the initial contact to the conclusion of the matter. This allowed for the development of good working relationships as well as the necessary level of trust to build between myself and the client. Housing was a busy department within the Centre and good team working skills were essential for the provision of services to be delivered effectively. I was, and remain, a strong team player who worked well with my colleagues and staff across many third party organisations. As the majority of my work was publicly funded I have experience of working with the Community Legal Service. I am also cost conscious and experienced in evidencing eligibility for services. Show less

Community Care Caseworker
-
May 2011 - Dec 2011
Assessing client's suitability for a legal aid claim in Community Care issues, identifying any other issues that may best be solved by another department, interviewing clients, drafting letters, managing multiple caseloads, and applying Community Care Law to the situation presented was my day to day role.During my time in the team there was an extensive period of team sickness and therefore it was an opportunity to hone case management skills to ensure that deadlines were met and the work of colleagues was effectively subsumed into remaining team members' case loads. It was during this time that I started to do more work on homeless families that lacked access to public funds and the potential avenues of support under the community care provision. This was to lead me to develop an interest in the area of homelessness which eventually led me to my role within the housing team (as detailed above). Show less

Kitchen Sales Co-worker
-
Aug 2007 - Jan 2012
Essentially I assisted customers with the planning of their kitchen. I offered advice and tips to customers to ensure that the kitchen the customer purchased was one that would both meet their needs and satisfy them but would also maximise custom via returning customers. A sales person first and foremost I had to attract potential custom by approaching customers and ensuring they were fully informed about the services available. Good customer dialogue and treating each customer as an individual ensured that I had a good sales record, customers who would come into store and ask for me personally and a clean complaints record. Demanding customers were an occupational hazard but good conflict management and a level head resulted in effective outcomes. I also processing kitchen orders, drafted custom made work tops and arranged Interest Free Credit agreements. Aside from customer facing work I was involved with maintaining stock accuracy and the ongoing maintenance of the showroom. I particularly enjoyed being seconded out to other departments to do night shifts to help with the "rebuild"; the building of new furniture, painting of walls and reconstructing departmental layout. You have to love every opportunity to whip out a power tool! Show less

Involved in both the Marketing and Widening Participation teams. On open days I would be involved in setting up the open day, guiding visitors to their correct locations, taking groups of parents and prospective students for campus wide tours and answering questions. With the widening participation it involved assisting with younger children when they were given tasks to do, taking groups on tours and, for the older groups, answering questions regarding Higher Education and motivating them to consider it as an option for them.
