Mark Wakelin-Gilden
I worked for Lionel for 6 years and found him to be an inspirational boss. He taught me much of what I know today and equipped me to run my own business. He even gave me a "leg-up" when I started Occam. Lionel then went on to be a valued supplier and advisor. He has been one of my closest friends for over 25 years.

Having worked for Lionel at ICD and IPT since 1988 (good heavens, that long?) I think that I understand him reasonably well. In those 20+ years I have seen Lionel build up two industry-leading companies that have developed ground-breaking products to service the offline and online marketing industries. Often where ICD and IPT have led, their competitors have followed. And even though IPT is established as a successful business, Lionel refuses to let us rest on our laurels and continues to push for improvements in quality and standards. Under Lionel’s stewardship, IPT has innovated and led the way in the online direct marketing industry. Over the years Lionel has mellowed, he’s still driven but is more considered. He’s also still full of ideas, many of which translate into great new products or valuable business improvements. And he still has the annoying knack of almost always being right. The bottom line in my opinion is that if anyone can build a successful business then Lionel can.

1993 - 1999
In 1993 I was appointed CEO of ICD Marketing Services Limited, a subsidiary of International Communication and Data plc (ICD), one of the largest lifestyle database companies in the UK. R.R. Donnelley and Sons Company acquired ICD in 1995 and integrated it into Metromail Corporation (the world’s biggest marketing company) its direct marketing subsidiary. From 1995 to 1998 I developed the business rapidly, introducing the first national survey mailing campaign. In total we conducted three national surveys supported by TV advertising (total capital expenditure £18 million) which increased ICD’s lifestyle database to 6.4 million households, the largest in the UK. In 1997 ICD reported profits of £1.8 million on sales of £14.9 million. I was in charge of overseas development at Metromail (Europe and Australia). In partnership with PMP Communications Pty, we successfully launched the first lifestyle data business in Australia (Pacific CDL), and I was also responsible for exploiting opportunities in France and Germany. I left ICD following the acquisition of Metromail by Great Universal Stores plc (GUS) in 1998 which was subsequently merged into their Experian division. Sales and Marketing Director

1987 - 1993
In 1987 there was a management buyout of the financial magazines as a few directors and I decided to concentrate on the data side of the business. Through the acquisition of numerous share registers we built the British Investor Database (BID) which contained the share ownership details of over 35,000,000 share investments of over 7,000,000 individuals, the biggest financial database in the world. From companies like the then newly floated BT and Abbey National through established businesses like ICI and Rolls Royce, BID became the industry benchmark financial database. Through the distribution of in excess of 50 million ‘Facts of Living’ lifestyle questionnaires inserted into women’s magazines, TV guides and Sunday supplements, I led the development of ICD’s lead to purchase database which we named the National Consumer Database We didn’t just collect and rent data though! By carefully segmenting our extensive database we created targeted mailing files to which we mailed our Advert Chequebook product which contained 30 or so tear out advertising cards where the recipient could request free information. Later we were the first UK company to mail out foil-wrapped advertising card decks, with volumes of up to 3 million decks per mailing. Our Telephone Information Services (TIS) business innovated Share Call, the first premium telephone service in the UK. We also set up Logoz, a collaboration between the Schober Group, a German marketing company and the Danish insurer Topdanmark to test lifestyle surveys in Germany and France, Show less

Financial Magazines was the first publisher in the UK to produce consumer-friendly financial magazines. Brushing aside over-complicated financial lingo, the success of its easy to understand magazines such as What Investment, What Mortgage and What Finance led Financial Magazines to be the largest publisher of its kind. Six months after joining the advertising sales team I became Group Sales Director. Financial Magazines was the first publisher in the UK to produce consumer-friendly financial magazines.
