  Plastic Footprint Analysis: Cigarette butts are often cited as the most abundant marine litter due to their high prevalence in coastal clean-up operations. Despite this, not much is known about the quantities transferred to and present in the oceans, their geographical origin, their behavior as macro-waste, their degradability into micro-plastics and their migration in the different marine compartments of the oceans. As part of a study, I performed: • The first global modeling of cigarette butts littering in the environment by analyzing 44,875 regions using GIS geoprocessing tools • The first global modeling of the input of cigarette butts into the oceans based on the latest studies on the transfer of plastics from the land to the ocean. • I proposed a description of cigarette butts behavior as macro-waste, their degradability and their migration into different marine compartments of the oceans Show less
