The main purposes of the role of the Associate Dean (Research and Enterprise) are to a) increase the quantity and improve the quality of research activity and outputs in the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences, b) further develop, secure and strengthen collaboration between the FHES and external parties including: business and corporate entities, government, professional groups, alumni and community organisations, and c) to work with the Dean other members of the Faculty Executive in strategy, planning, leadership and management of the Faculty. The Associate Dean (Research and Enterprise) supports the Dean in leading research development and building research capability and productivity in the Faculty. The Associate Dean chairs the Faculty Research Committee, a key communication, policy and funding committee, and is responsible for maintaining records and reporting on research activity and outcomes. The Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology (~9 FTE) also sit within the Faculty Research Office and the HoD reports to this role. Show less

My School was responsible for: a) the delivery of the four core papers that all students in our faculty take in their first semester, b) the delivery of five shared papers that all Bachelor of Health Science students take over the course of their degree, and c) the programmes: Bachelor of Health Science, Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma in Health Science. This School was the largest grouping of students (EFTS) in the faculty (over 1000), with classes of up to 1600 in the core papers.

The administration and management components of this role were considerable: being a member of the School Management Team and Operations Group, Exam Board, Programme Committee and Faculty Board. Some of the additional responsibilities of PL were: line management of academic staff, hiring and mentoring part-time lecturing staff, student counseling and pastoral care, curriculum development, assisting with recruiting enrolment and marketing. I managed the extramural programs in Environmental Studies. Internationally, students from Fiji Institute of Technology were offered the third year of our BAppSc extramurally. Until 2007 this programme was also offered to extramural students from Bay of Plenty Polytech, Northland Polytech and Southland Institute of Technology. Show less
