I worked as a speech language pathology student with children between the ages of 1 month to 19 years old. I spent part of the day in the NICU with babies, providing language stimulation and managing speaking valves. Another part of the day I was in the inpatient area with children working on feeding (behavioral), dysphagia, tracheostomies, and speaking valves. I spent another part of the day with outpatient clients working on speech and language, including AAC devices. I work one on one with a ten year old with autism. He is nonverbal and communicates over an AAC device. This day consists of me reinforcing him to use the AAC device to communicate, expanding his interests in the community (Ex. pool and basketball), and encouraging him to spend time with his twin sister. I lead children with communication delays and intellectual disabilities through speech language therapy sessions and hippotherapy sessions. Hippotherapy is the use of horseback riding as a therapeutic and rehabilitation treatment. I interned for two weeks during the summers of 2016 and 2017. This camp expanded my understanding of children with autism and other developmental delays as well as the impact of therapy on these children. I witnessed how impactful the hippotherapy session were for these children's sensory and behavioral needs.
