I had the distinct pleasure of working with Lindsay for 4 years. During that brief time, I saw her seamlessly go from trusted colleague to revered department director. Regardless of her role, she was always thoughtful, deliberate, and sincere with her actions. She was an effective leader because she remained consistent to the mission of the organization and was able to balance the needs of its stakeholders. One of the qualities I admire most in Lindsay was her ability to takes incredibly complex challenges and break them down into components that were much easier to address. This allowed for different parts of a project to be handled by people with particular strengths, but it also allowed for individuals to step up and increase their own strengths and capacities. Lindsay encouraged collaboration and communication across teams and fostered an environment where we were able to grow as professionals and individuals. More importantly, she valued us employees as much, if not more, than the work we were producing. I am happy to have worked with her for the brief time I did and it has made me a better person overall. I model many of my management decisions on what I learned from her and I hope that our paths will cross again soon.

Lindsay was serving as the interim director of the Instructional Design and Learning Support team at UCLA Extension when she hired me as a Video Producer. After my initial job interview, I knew I wanted to work for her and I was not disappointed. Lindsay was and is an incredibly empathetic, knowledgeable, and innovative leader. I entered IDLS at a particularly tumultuous time at UCLA Extension. At the organizational level, leadership was in disarray. Employees in other departments were quitting at a startling rate. However, with Lindsay as interim director of our team, I always felt valued, listened to, and believed in. Our team, despite the challenges facing the organization as a whole, remained productive, spirited, flexible, and hopeful under Lindsay's leadership. She invested in her employees. IDLS followed an agile work model and Lindsay regularly scheduled meetings with the team where she would plan activities, talks, debriefs, and exercises that both challenged us and bonded us as a team. She would always allot time to recognize the work we'd done in a week and share our wins with the group. Lindsay's emotional intelligence made her an adept and effective supervisor. She was skilled at identifying the shortcomings of any one particular staff member and instead of disciplining them, she would find creative ways to address the blocks in their performance. Consequently, our team was exceptional at UCLA Extension. We took on an inordinate amount of work and always delivered amazing results ahead of schedule. I believe that a huge part of this was the transparency with which Lindsay addressed individuals and our team. She believed in riding out the storm together and because of that, our 24 person team functioned collaboratively in ways I have not experienced anywhere else. We all knew Lindsay to be honest, genuine, and forthcoming. I'm very proud of the work I did under her leadership. She supported the projects I wanted to pursue and always had my career advancement on her mind. I'm lucky to have worked for her and not only consider her a constant professional reference, but also dear friend.
