Social Media Manager
-
Jan 2020 - Jul 2020
As Social Media Manager for Oxide Radio, I gained experience in web-building and advertising. I used Squarespace to create and maintain the web-pages for individual shows (I have the same experience with Wordpress). I acted as the first point of communication for any advertising or promotional-related queries from presenters, and I trained presenters in using Squarespace for their individual show pages. As a presenter, I also became very efficient at uploading my own show to Centova (to schedule it for its live slot) and Mixcloud (to create the podcast that was then embedded onto the Squarespace page). I was also responsible for Oxide’s advertising campaigns, including advertising for new shows and new committee members as we came to the end of the year with many committee members set to graduate. I used multiple different design software to make these as successful as possible, and therefore I developed photoshop and design skills for projects of this scale. Most importantly, I was responsible for creating a new way to enjoy radio during the COVID-19 pandemic, when few presenters were able to record live episodes as they lacked access to the radio studio or the necessary technology. I came up with ‘Into the Archives’ which I used as an opportunity to promote our existing presenters in the form of a Q&A. I also asked them to recommend one episode of their show, the one they thought was most special, that I then circulated on Oxide’s social media. This was a way for listeners to discover a new radio show and a new presenter.

I presented, researched and edited Sounds of the City on Oxide Radio (Oxford University's student run radio station), and I had the time of my life in the radio studio. I learnt how to use technology including the mixing desk and microphone setup, and specific programmes, including Audacity, Centova, Mixcloud and Squarespace. I fully researched every show, and I became interested in everything I found, from statistics about artists’ success, to cover versions that I hadn’t heard of, to discovering unexpected connections and relationships between artists and labels and fanbases. I made eighteen episodes of Sounds of the City across three terms of university, and I was always learning about the music industry in that time. Likewise, I developed skills in writing and researching, in presenting, in advertising my own show, and in studio technology. I learnt all about the setup of the studio and how to achieve the most successful and high-quality recording, and I learnt to problem solve when the technology inevitably did something unexpected. I would only get a couple of hours in the studio to record and edit an entire episode, so I became very quick at solving technological problems, such as working out the sound input on the Mac desktop, or fixing the mixing desk, in order to not lose valuable time recording my show.

I was involved in the administrative running of the office and I quickly acquired office experience as a result; this included keeping the space organised, and learning their specific systems for post, newspapers and PR materials. Likewise, I sent lots of post out, to subscribers, contributors and the TLS mailing list. I also updated the databases where contributors’ information was recorded, and maintained the audit spreadsheet, where the information about each issue of the paper is found, and also where their ongoing commitment to equity among contributors is marked. In addition to this, I performed editing tasks with adherence to editors’ corrections, and performed first and second edits on published pieces. I was both a fact checker and a proof reader on published pieces, including major features. I ran the email account for TLS communications – including ordering proof and advance copies of books, communicating with contributors about pieces due for publication and providing advice, information and support to readers and subscribers with any enquiries. I received and logged books for review from publishers, and distributing to reviewers – this also involved keeping the database of reviews updated. I used Wordpress to upload numerous posts to website and app. The role at the TLS required proficiency with specialist programmes to be learnt quickly including Methode, the in-house design and layout programme which is used for every aspect of the upcoming paper, including the design of the print issue, making copy edits, and printing the whole paper.
