I am currently working alongside another assistant director on this vibrant, funny, and multi-cultural musical that is inspired by over 100 local Brighton stories surrounding their relationship and history with food. The play centres on a woman who has recently moved to Brighton and is struggling financially. She decides to go to a community kitchen and meets a whole new community! It is a joy working on this production developing my skills working with non-professional adults, challenging (in the best way) my directorial style to encourage actors to have more agency in warm-ups, and I have also developed my communication skills in asking questions and providing precise notes. Please find more of my responsibilities below! I assist the directors in making creative and dramaturgical decisions. I lead warm-ups that develop ensemble feeling, fearlessness, and playfulness. I write rehearsal reports reflecting on how the cast felt and on how the directors led the rehearsal highlighting what they did well and suggesting improvements. I also note down as much blocking as possible of the 30-strong cast. I have cued music for the singing rehearsals as well as fielding a range of questions from the cast. I will support the technical and dress rehearsals in September as we go into the performance days. Show less

CONTENT WARNING: MENTION OF SUICIDE This play was about a young woman who is about to commit suicide but then meets a new friend who seems very interested in her life. I led the warm-ups that connected the actor to their creative core focusing them on being present and open to the creative offers made by other actors. I also led improvisations that deepened the knowledge of relationships between the characters. I experimented within rehearsals with movement and developed a movement sequence that opened the play which was well-received by the writer. I enjoyed exploring non-verbal ways to communicate relationships and the history of those relationships with an audience. I would simply love to develop this further. I organised rehearsal schedules liasing with four people to ensure three successful spaces were booked. I was also a point of pastoral care helping actors feel confident and safe playing their characters providing techniques to help them get into character without feeling emotionally drained which is an important part of my compassion-centred practice. I rapidly solved issues inside and outside of rehearsal of actors not being able to get into character safely by quickly drawing on Michael Chekhov's work and creating exercises inspired by his ideas which was extremely successful in my aim of emotionally safe performance. I look forward to developing this practice as I grow as a young director. Show less

This was an innovative re-imagining of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Adapted by critically acclaimed writer, Sarah May, and envisioned by the brilliant director that was Ben May. Performed at the ex-military ground, Newhaven Fort, this play bridged different time periods from today to the 1990s where the Shakespeare play took place. I had the pleasure to have multiple responsibilities expanding my knowledge of Shakespeare and working with young people in the process. Firstly, I led the recruiting of the cast reaching out to universities, colleges, and schools as well as using Facebook to gather interest and bring young actors to our audition. The result of this was a complete cast of 14 young people were found largely due to this. A further list of responsibilities are below: I assisted the director creatively learning about his style of directing and changing my communication style to support his focus on actions, intentions, stakes, and predicaments. I led the Twitter marketing with regular posting and eye-catching videos and photos. I was a point of pastoral care for the cast making them feel like they can come to me for whatever problem big or small. I also kept a record of attendance, independently rehearsed with actors where the results of these rehearsals were praised by the director, and kept morale up within the company. I was always excited by my range in responsibilities from supervising our young costume designer to pick costumes to supporting the director in tech rehearsals. Finally, I took the initiative to study Shakespeare's play understanding the key plot points and themes in order to deepen my understanding of our modern take. I deeply enjoyed my time working here developing my confidence in working with young people, Shakespeare's texts, and myself. Show less
