Trainee teacher - Dutch as a foreign language

As a trainee Dutch as a foreign language teacher I taught children, adolescents and adults. I worked in the preparatory training of higher education for foreign speakers (VTHO), organised by the University of Ghent. In that training, adult students who do not speak Dutch at home or whose mother tongue is not Dutch prepare themselves to enroll in a Dutch programme in higher education. Apart from my experience in the VTHO, I also taught students in a centre for adult education with a B1 level in Dutch and students in a centre for basic education in what is called an 'ALFA module'. That module targets non-Dutch-speaking illiterates. The goal is to teach those students to understand and communicate in Dutch up until an A2 level, keeping into account that they cannot read or write. The last group of pupils I tutored was an OKAN-group. Pupils in an OKAN group are between 12 and 18 years old and follow an intensive one-year Dutch course to prepare them for a transition to regular Dutch-speaking secondary education. Show less

I worked there for 2.5 years for various internal clients and learned about copywriting, UX-design, chatbots and much more. I also learned a lot about myself: what I appreciate in a manager, what role I take on in a team and what gives me energy. After a while, I noticed that I had even more energy when I could explain things to others, give presentations and have the feeling of having taught others something.
