Resident Student Assistant, dealing with safeguarding, security and medical emergencies as an out of hours support package for students living on campus at the university. The role required me to board on campus with first year students in halls of residence to provide support signposting to relevant services whilst providing advice on essential academic, professional and life skills. I would be on call and work shifts over night on weekdays, or a whole day on weekends. Being called out required me to communicate with the security and my line managers to ensure that all students involved were safe, as well as ensuring the safety of my colleagues. These events could range from a student who is mentally unwell who required support, to a physical or medical emergency. Students would often disclose sensitive information that they felt uncomfortable to share publicly due to the strong relationships that we had built with one another throughout the year, however sometimes I was required to make the decision to break the confidentiality chain. This was only broken when deemed necessary to inform my line manager or the relevant emergency services should the disclosure be greater than my qualification or a student was identified as “at risk”. After each call out I would also write an incident report detailing the exact nature and series of events, the care or treatment provided and any other relevant services contacted (should that be necessary). I would also have regular meetings with my line manager to debrief after submitting a report. Show less
