Research Associate in Ornithology

Apr 2020 - Sep 2020
Specialising in migratory patterns of northern wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe) and how their movement timing links with mating strategy. Pursue solo and group expeditions in the field. Identify songbirds through vocalisations and through visualisation (binoculars, scopes and cameras). Observe birds and use a Garmin Etrex 10 GPS device to locate and record historical and newly identified wheatear nests and territories.Collate territory and nest coordinates and produce Excel databases, converting them into .csv format. Import these files into QGIS to edit distributions according to field notes (e.g. observer location, North-South direction and distance). Produce habitat surveys using local Italian methodology including environmental features such as plant species/type, percentage cover, vegetation height, snow, gullies and anecdotes.Construct and dismantle mist nets and spring traps. Attached rings and GPS loggers to successfully caught birds. Biological measurements were recorded and were compared to previous recordings (e.g. age, weight, fat, muscle, wing length, body condition).Key achievement: Collaborating within a small team of international personnel from Italy, Germany, France and Norway to collect comprehensive datasets appropriate for statistical analysis within a PhD project
