The masters component, partnered with Hydrotec, looked at developing a novel method for capturing pre-swirl in submersible pumps. A computational fluid dynamics model was built in ANSYS Fluent to measure the magnitude of pre-swirl for induced flow directions capturing the trend seen in experiments. An adaptation of the pump was also made to allow for automated calculation of the pre-swirl quantity, improving measurement time by over 1000%. My PhD looks to numerically model the carry-over (fate of droplets after impinging a surface) of droplets generated from aerosol cans. Using ANSYS Fluent a validated numerical model has been built which models both the carry jet and complex droplet physics. The validation includes experimental work from the current literature and our own schlieren and Spraytec measurements. Show less

Numerically modelled exhaled aerosols/droplets using computational fluid dynamics to support SARS-CoV-2 studies. The model tracked the trajectory of the aerosols and determined their fate, incorporating both droplet evaporation and turbulence interaction. The results allowed for the optimisation of aerosol sampler positions in order to capture a representative sample of exhaled aerosols.

Throughout my time at UEA I undertook many projects, both in a group and individually. My first project introduced me to MATLAB and provided me with a strong basis in the language. During my third year at university I undertook a BSc project on vortex dynamics. I furthered my knowledge of MATLAB by modelling the motion of a pair of leapfrogging point vortices using a fourth order Runge Kutta scheme. I was also introduced to LaTeX, a program used to compose mathematics, which I used to write up my project. In my final year I chose to look at the contour dynamics of axisymmetric vortex rings. I found this project fascinating, which inspired me to pursue a career in research. In pursuit of this, I have been accepted into the Centre for Doctoral Training at Leeds University starting September 2017. Show less

In my gap year I worked at the food retailer Budgens. My time here provided me with substantial experience of working in a team. My communication and organisational skills had to be of an excellent standard in order to do my part in keeping the business running smoothly. In my gap year I worked at the food retailer Budgens.
