Within my role at Mars Petcare, I had the responsibility for leading a portfolio of projects to: (i) determine the ideal odour profile of branded pet food for both consumer (human) and pets; (ii) deliver this new odour profile in product through manipulation of processing conditions and product formulation (raw material and food additives); (iii) ensure odour stability of product during product shelf life; and (iv) mitigate any unwanted odour during and after the pet feeding event. The projects managed involved flavour chemistry, process chemistry, analytical chemistry, sensory science and behavioral science. With regards to analytical chemistry I was responsible for the strategy and development of the volatile analysis capability, purchase of equipment and management of revenue budgets. Within the role I supervised a team of scientists, including visiting international postgraduate students and undergraduate industrial placement students.
